Baltimore Choral Arts 57th Season!

Sep 15, 2022

In its 57th season, Baltimore Choral Arts explores works of great vibrancy and fervor with our 2022-23 season: Celebrating Dynamic Voices.

Our four-concert subscription series commences under the baton of conductor Anthony Blake Clark with highlights from our first European tour since the global pandemic of 2020. Focal points of the season include guest appearances from conductor Rosephanye Powell, WYPR's Judith Krummeck, and Baltimore vocalists Carl DuPont and Rachel Blaustein. Choral Arts repertoire includes works ranging from the traditional to modern which showcases female composers, Handel, Bernstein, and Mendelssohn.

"Choral music is a unique medium within art because of its instant ability to communicate a message. Now more than ever, we need a message of hope, joy, and unity. In 2022-2023 Baltimore Choral Arts presents another dynamic season of these hopeful messages delivered by world-class artists both from Baltimore and far beyond. I am thrilled to bring Rosephanye Powell to Baltimore to conduct her own works. We have a special relationship with Dr. Powell, whose music you can enjoy on our Christmas album. In addition to working with exceptional artists, I am thrilled to explore nuanced repertoire that spans genre and theme. Bringing the emotionally charged “Stabat Mater” and the triumphant masterwork “Elijah” is sure to delight our audiences. Even more exciting is that we will have the unique opportunity to present these programs, among others, to audiences both here and abroad!"

- Anthony Black Clark, Music Director for Baltimore Choral Arts Society

The season begins in October with a concert entitled EuroTour 2022: Berlin, Prague, Vienna, featuring highlights from our European Tour. While abroad Choral Arts will partake in collaborations with Marin Alsop and the Vienna Radio Symphony Orchestra, and engage audiences at events such as the Choral Space festival in the Berliner Philharmonie. Our time abroad will be celebrated upon our return in a concert with works by Mendelssohn, Handel, Berlioz, and Bernstein. Baltimore native Rachel Blaustein will be a featured soloist in Candide's"Glitter and be Gay". The notable work of TaReKiTa by Reena Esmail will commence the evening performance.

In December we will present Christmas with Choral Arts. This program, formerly featured on WMAR-TV, WYPR Radio, and WBJC Radio, continues a 29-year tradition with holiday music, dramatic readings, and cherished sing-alongs spreading Christmas cheer! This year, Choral Arts is especially thrilled to announce WYPR's Judith Krummeck as the narrator for this joyous event. Our new broadcast times will be announced this fall. In addition to our subscription concerts, we will continue our children’s program, Christmas for Kids,in collaboration with Synetic Theater.

In March, Choral Arts is thrilled to welcome back guest conductor Rosephanye Powell for an energized concert that connects old and new. Appropriately titled, Her Voice, this concert will feature works inspired and created by women. This performance will include Scarlatti’s famed choral masterwork conducted by Anthony Blake Clark, and works by Powell herself. Previously featured on our Christmas at America’s First Cathedral CD/DVD, this will be Powell's second performance with Choral Arts, who in addition to her work as a music director, is an esteemed composer, educator, and performer.

We conclude our season of celebrating dynamic voices with one of Mendelssohn’s finest works, Elijah,a masterpiece inspired by the great religious works of Bach and Handel.Carl DuPont, one of Baltimore's finest Bass-Baritones and music educators, will perform the title role in Mendelssohn’s Elijah. The performance will take place in the newly renovated Murphy Fine Arts Center, a beautiful concert hall with balcony and box seating located at the renowned Morgan State University. The full piece will be performed with an intermission in this exhilarating event.
